How to: Wiring a 3 pin rocker switch
A rocker switch is common used in the 4x4, vehicle, canopy and boating industry. A 3 pin rocker switch is a variation of this switch that has three pins, which can be wired in different configurations depending on the application. In this blog post, we will discuss how to wire a 3 pin rocker switch.
First, let's take a look at the pin layout of a 3 pin rocker switch. The pins are numbered 1 through 3 on the back of the switch. Here is a breakdown of each pin:
2: Power: This pin is where you connect the power source for the switch.
3: Output 1 (Top of Switch): This pin is the first output for the switch. It can be used to control a device or circuit.
1: Output 2 (Bottom of Switch): This pin is the second output for the switch. It can be used to control a different device or circuit.
Now that we know the pin layout, let's talk about how to wire the switch. The wiring will vary depending on the application, but we will use a simple example to illustrate the process.
Let's say we want to use the switch to control a 12V LED light bar on the upper switch and driving lights on the lower switch. Here's how we would wire the switch:
-
Connect the power source for the switch to pin 2. In this case, we will connect a 12V power source from the vehicles battery.
-
Connect the positive wire to the relay going to the LED light bar to pin 3. This will be the first output for the switch.
-
Connect the negative wire for the LED light bar to the vehicle's chassis or negative battery terminal.
-
Connect the positive wire going to the relay for the driving lights to pin 1. This will be the second output for the switch.
-
Connect the negative wire for the driving lights to the vehicle's chassis or negative battery terminal.
That's it! Now when the switch is turned on (upper), it will supply power to the LED light bar. When the switch is turned on (lower), it will supply power to the driving lights. When the switch is turned off (middle), power will be cut off to the LED light bar and driving lights.
Remember, the wiring for a 3-pin rocker switch can vary depending on the application. Be sure to consult the switch's documentation or a wiring diagram before wiring the switch in your circuit.
